The Tower of Babel in Contemporary Child Analysis:

Working to Translate Languages and Meanings

The ACP International and Inter-Organizational Committee will host a virtual conference highlighting our growth in a worldwide presence through a case presentation of child analytic work with a preschool-aged girl from South Korea. Dr. Sunghee Han (South Korea) will present the case of Yuna, aged three years and eleven months at the start of her treatment, and follow the impact on her developmental course of Yuna's transition from the English to the Korean language through the course of the treatment and her mother's postpartum and persisting depression, highlighting elements of infantile sexuality, evolving gender identifications, and aggressive play. Following audience Q&A and a break, Dr. Jennifer Davids (UK) focuses on matters of language and its forms and describes translation from the internal world through play and symbolic function, as well as on the socio-cultural context in which this treatment unfolded. Dr. Susan Donner (USA) will highlight the role of work with the parents of the analysand to promote more complex and flexible views of the child and a greater investment in her developing mind. After a second audience Q&A, the panel concludes with an address on sociocultural and diversity and training issues.  Dr. Susan Sherkow (USA) provides comments on supervision and context, IPSO Candidate Representative Konstantinos Taliouridis (IPSO Vice President North American Region) on training perspectives, and child and adolescent training and supervising analyst Micky Bhatia (India) on community outreach and supervising from an international perspective.

A Psychoanalytic Conversation about Childhood Trauma, its Meaning and Impacts

Hosted by the ACP Extension Committee, on February 21st 2026 we will listen as two seasoned analysts converse about the issues they have raised in their articles in recent volumes of Psychoanalytic Study of the Child.

Following the presentation of a short summary, Diana Rosenstein and Thomas Barrett discuss the implications of the similarities and differences of their optics on aspects of childhood trauma each raised in their paper. There will then be an hour for the audience members to present their comments and ask their questions.

The two papers that form the focus of the program will be available on the Routledge Publications website before the event:

Rosenstein, D. S. (2024),  Custody Conflict as a Developmental Trauma.  PSC, 77(1); 26-40.

Barrett. T. F. (2025).  Loss and mourning in Early Childhood:  The Role of Emotional Attunement in the Treatment of Complex Trauma.  PSC, 78(1); 25-44.

We anticipate a lively and informative meeting of minds and hope you can join us.

Registration will open late 2025
